5 Makeup Tips for Deep Skin Tones
All of us are made up of different shapes, sizes, and skin tones. From fair to deep, your unique combination is what makes you...you! There is no true “one-size-fits-all” and makeup tips are no exception.
CLOVE + HALLOW wants to make sure no skin tone goes unnoticed. We understand that each skin color deserves an equal amount of attention. Unfortunately, some beauty gurus and cosmetics companies don’t quite get that yet.
To retaliate against ridiculous industry norms, we have curated a list of 5 makeup tips specifically suited for all our deep skin toned beauties out there.
Makeup can only do so much, so it is important to find a great skincare routine. For dark-skinned beauties, including daily sunscreen in your morning skincare routine is extra important due to the likelihood of hyperpigmentation - aka those pesky dark marks that linger from acne, ingrown hairs, etc. Sunlight makes dark marks last longer, so make sure to use a sunscreen to lessen the intensity and duration of any scarring!
We aren’t saying a little bit of gloss isn’t allowed in your life, but no one can rock a rich, velvety, matte lippie like someone with a deep skin tone. For a daytime look, stick to simple nudes in the chocolate or mauve variety. When it’s time to go out at night, there’s no better choice than bold reds and deep purples. We suggest reaching for our Sugarbear or Uptown Lip Velvets by day, and our Psych Lip Creme by night. Don’t forget to exfoliate before application!
You know that everyone’s skin is different, but did you know there are shades WITHIN your shades? It’s important to understand all of the undertones and variations that make up your face. We often think we are one color all over, but that’s not the case. When choosing a foundation, you need to keep this in mind. You should always start with the center of your face, which will be your lightest layer. After that, you can follow the shadows on your face with a darker shade. This way, you are following the natural contour of your face and adhering to all the diverse shades within it. Selecting the right shades for each layer requires paying attention to your undertones - typically golden, olive, or red - to avoid chalky or mismatched face makeup.
They say eyes are the windows into your soul, so might as well show them off! Apply highlighter to your brow bone, the apples of your cheeks, your chin, and the center of your forehead to make your eyes appear larger. If you aren’t into glimmer and shimmer, there are many highlighters on the market that have a more “natural” effect by creating a dewy shine. The contrast against dark skin makes any look appear more polished!
Even well-seasoned makeup junkies sometimes forget to apply blush, but blush is that finishing touch of color every face needs. On deeper skin tones, adding blush is even more important to creating a glamorous finished look, since natural flushes don’t show through as overtly. Warmer colors will compliment deep skin tones best, so find a bronze, coral, deep peach, or wine red and pop it onto the apples of your cheeks.
