FAQ

Where can I purchase your products in-person?

CLOVE + HALLOW is partnered with a number of amazing retailers. To find one near you, please check out our retailer locator page.

Will you ever be sold at ____ retailer?

If there is a particular retailer that you would like to see our products in, please let us know. More importantly, reach out to the retailer directly; customer demand is the quickest way to get our products onto their shelves!

How long do your products last? When will mine expire?

To determine the expiration date of a particular product, please refer to the box packaging it arrived in. On it, you will see a jar symbol with a timeframe inside - typically 12M (12 months) or 24M (24 months), although it varies between products. Please note that this time period begins after the product is first opened. If you have thrown away your box and wish to know your product’s expiration date, please contact our customer service team.

Are CLOVE + HALLOW products gluten free? What about fragrance free?

Ingredient decks may vary from product-to-product so we encourage you to check on each individually, but all of our products are always free from:
Animal by-products
Animal testing or cruelty
Gluten
Parabens
Phthalates
Mineral/petroleum oil
Artificial fragrance
Artificial flavor
Talc
Bismuth Oxychloride
Phenoxyethanol

Some of your products use synthetic ingredients, such as dimethicone and sodium benzoate. Why?

While we strive to rely upon as many natural and organic ingredients as possible, there are some limitations when using them exclusively. At CLOVE + HALLOW, we stick to creating clean cosmetics by starting off with an all natural formula and supplementing only as needed with safe synthetics - either for pigmentation, preservation, or performance purposes. To learn more about the safe synthetics we use and why, please check out this blog post written by our founder.

Why does CLOVE + HALLOW use FD&C dyes?

Only some of our products use FD&C dyes. When formulating, we always start with a base of 100% natural dyes and supplement only as needed with FD&C dyes in order to achieve the bright and vibrant shades that we are known for. Natural dyes alone cannot achieve those shades. FD&C stands for Food, Drugs, and Cosmetics, meaning each batch has been tested and certified by the FDA for usage in those three delivery systems. Based on current research, we do not believe that utilizing FD&C dyes in tiny amounts as a supplement to natural dyes poses a health risk.

Why does the world need another clean cosmetics line?

The short answer is: Shade range, payoff, and price-point. Most clean beauty brands offer products that are sheer, expensive, and lacking in shade range. With CLOVE + HALLOW, you get pro-grade products that don’t require a change in expectations when compared to conventional classics. What does CLOVE + HALLOW mean?

Clove is meant to evoke the warmth we hope you feel from our welcoming brand, and Hallow encompasses the ritualistic and revered relationship that women have with their beauty routines. Our founder chose the name CLOVE + HALLOW with intention, because these words truly represent who we are as a clean cosmetics brand.

What does “clean” mean -- are your products all-natural?

Our products are not 100% natural, although they are all primarily natural. We do not believe that natural inherently qualifies an ingredient as good, or that, conversely, synthetics are inherently bad. “Clean” means that our focus is on creating cosmetics that are free from harmful ingredients without compromising on performance, quality, or price-point. All of our ingredients, whether natural or synthetic, are rigorously researched for safety within the context of a particular formulation and selected based on serving a necessary function - such as pigmentation, preservation, or performance. “Clean” means you can be certain that over 1500+ toxic offenders that are known carcinogens, endocrine and hormone disruptors, allergens, and animal by-products will never be in our products. We know there are a lot of different brands throwing around lots of different words to decribe their products, so we encourage our customers to thoroguhly read ingredient labels and make educated decisions for themselves; for our part, we promise to always do the leg-work to ensure our ingredient lists are safe and transparent.

Where are your products made?

All CLOVE + HALLOW products are carefully curated and manufactured in the USA but formulated to more stringent EU standards.

Your products are cruelty free, but what about animal byproducts?

Our clean cosmetics are not only cruelty-free, but PETA-certified vegan as well. We don’t use any animal byproducts – ethically sourced or otherwise. No honey, no beeswax, nada.

Do you use synthetic fragrance or flavors?

CLOVE + HALLOW never uses synthetic fragrance or flavor due to the lack of regulation surrounding these ingredients. Under current policies, “fragrance” and “flavor” are considered trade secrets that can cover up anywhere from 10-30 additional toxic ingredients that do not have to be explicitly disclosed on the ingredient label. Whatever fragrance or flavoring we do use — usually an essential oil or extract — will be clearly labeled on our clean cosmetics ingredient list so you know exactly what you’re getting.

Aren’t some essential oils irritating to skin or unsafe for pregnant women?

Essential oils in their undiluted form can be irritating if applied directly to the skin. Our clean cosmetics utilize essential oils in a very low concentration as an alternative to toxic synthetic fragrance. In this capacity, they are generally safe for even sensitive skin. That being said, if you are pregnant or have any other specific healthcare concerns, please contact a medical professional.

Are CLOVE + HALLOW products waterproof? Do they contain SPF?

Our products are water resistant due to their emollient levels, however, they are not waterproof unless specifically noted. We formulate our clean cosmetics with the highest quality ingredients possible, so they will last on your skin. As for SPF: While most of our formulas use minerals that offer sun protection benefits, we cannot guarantee any level of SPF unless specifically noted on the package, so be sure to wear sunscreen daily!

How do I choose a foundation that matches my skin tone?

Shade matching online is tricky. To ease that burden, check out our lookbook for suggested matches. In addition, we offer a sampling program for $14 that allows you to sample three shades of concealer and three shades of powder foundation near your skin tone to find your match. If you still have concerns or are confused, send an email to cs@cloveandhallow.com and a matching specialist will get back to you.

Are CLOVE + HALLOW products safe for pregnancy?

We only use ingredients that are derived from nature or have been studied extensively and deemed safe. That being said, we recommend having a discussion with your doctor to double check any health risks associated with ingredients.

What’s the best way to remove CLOVE + HALLOW products?

Any makeup remover is suitable to remove our products, but we recommend our Makeup Melt—a balm-to-oil makeup removing cleanser that won’t dry out your skin and has been specifically formulated to our Clean15 standards.

What are your shipping and return policies?

We offer free ground shipping for orders over $50, as well as $5.99 flat-rate shipping to anywhere in the USA. If you aren’t happy with a product for any reason, we can exchange or offer a refund within 30 days of purchase date. Your happiness and satisfaction is our top priority!
